  The Herald Journal (Logan, UT) January 28, 2016 Karen Hawkins Petersen passed away peacefully on January 26, 2016. Karen was born May 29, 1935, in Burley, Idaho, to William F. Hawkins & LaVaun Nye. Karen attended Logan City Schools, & USU. On February 3, 1955, she was married to Derrall C. Petersen and later sealed in the Logan Temple on July 9 She and her husband lived 2 ½ years in Washington and the remainder of the years as residents of Hyrum. She served in many capacities as: PTA pres., Hyrum Ladies Civic club pres., Lions Club pres. & Lions Zone chairman, pres. of Cache Chamber of Commerce, pres. of Women in Business Cache Chamber of Commerce, Cache County Republican Women pres. & So. Region vice-pres. & treasurer, 5 Leg. Dist. co-chair, board member of CAPSA, Boys & Girls Club, member of Soroptimist International, member of Foundation for the Library and Museum of Hyrum. Served two four-year terms on the Hyrum City Council, from Jan. 1988 to Jan 1996. She was instrumental in the development of the senior center and for many years she served as chairman of the Community Progress Committee. She had a great love for her community and a desire to serve. She was recognized as Distinguished Citizen of Hyrum in 1996 and Soroptimist International of Logan, Woman of Distinction in 1992. As a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she faithfully served in many auxiliary positions including Stake Young Women counselor for 9 years, and president for 8 years. Karen's greatest accomplishment was her family. She loved her husband, children, daughters in law, grandchildren and great-grand children and they absolutely adored and loved her. She cherished her relationship with all her family and her dear friends. Her ever present smile and glowing personality will be forever missed. Survived by four sons, Corey (Kathy) Petersen of Poway Calif., Michael (Ida) Petersen of Great Falls Montana, Jeffrey Petersen of Logan, and Christopher (Oana) of Hyrum. 15 grand children, 11 great-grand children, sisters in law Betty (Doyle) Hawkins, Delone (Wes) Bailey. Preceded in death by husband Derrall Nov 18, 08, parents William F. & LaVaun Nye, and 3 brothers Gale, Doyle, & Thayne Hawkins. In-laws Eugene & Leora Petersen, brother in law Jay Petersen, Wes Bailey, Al Lundahl, Doug Borlaise Sisters in law Rhea Lundahl, Ruth Borlase and Bara Petersen.
