WABASHA, Minn. '97 Mary C. Whiting, 93, of Wabasha, formerly of Waseca, Minn., died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at St. Elizabeth's Health Care Center in Wabasha. She was born March 1, 1911, on the family farm near Kellogg, Minn., the daughter of William and Mary (Costello) O'Flaherty. She was a graduate of St. Felix High School in Wabasha and attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn., for one year. She worked for several legislators as a secretary for the 1935 state Legislature. She met her future husband, Clinton Whiting, while working in the office of the Botsford Lumber Co. The couple married April 29, 1941, in St. Paul. They lived and worked for the lumber company in Balaton and Jackson, Minn., and in 1956, they moved to Waseca to work for the company there. While in Waseca, Mary also worked for the Waseca Public Library. Clinton died Dec. 10, 1999. She moved to St. Elizabeth's Assisted Living Apartments in April 2000, having been familiar with her hometown and St. Elizabeth's. Mary enjoyed her homemaking and playing bridge.
She is survived by sister-in-law, Viola O'Flaherty, La Crescent, Minn.; nieces and nephews, Gerald O'Flaherty, La Crescent, Jerry Stensland, Rochester, Minn., John Stensland, Rochester, Stanley Stensland, Zumbrota, Minn., Dale Stensland, Wanamingo, Minn., Janice Horsman, Zumbrota, Shirley Koestler, Dodge Center, Minn., Karen Deones, Pine Island, Minn., Bonnie Hanebuth, Congress, Ariz. Her husband and one brother, Joseph, preceded her in death.
Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Kellogg.
