HYRUM, Utah - Weldon Osborn Nye, 74, went home to his father in heaven April 11, 2002, due to complications of heart surgery. He was born on Aug. 5, 1927, in Ogden, Utah, to Delbert Osborn and Sarah Martin Nerden Nye. He was married to Marie Bateman in 1950, and they later divorced. He was then married to Marilyn Nielsen Smith on Nov. 20, 1982, in Hyrum. They were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on Sept. 15, 1989.
He proudly attended and graduated from Ogden High. He graduated with two bachelor of science degrees from Weber State University. When he was 11 years old, he was apprenticed to a shoemaker, later becoming apprenticed as a printer/pressman. He later owned his own print shops in Fresno, Calif., and Ogden. He was employed with the Bamberger Railroad for a time as a mailbag and telegraph operator. He was a social worker at the Moweda Youth Center in Ogden and a counselor at the Jobcorp Center in Ogden. He was also employed as a welfare counselor. He was an EMT/first responder in Rigby, Idaho. He taught school and counseled at a school in Fresno. After his first heart attack he was employed at the Deseret Industries in Logan, Utah, and also at Icon Health and Fitness.
He was a proud member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions which included: high priest, stake missionary, ward clerk, teacher and Elders Quorum president. What he loved the most was the Primary calling. He refereed basketball, little league football, wrestling and softball for 17 years. He enjoyed participating in the ROTC, Stage Guild, Lions Club and American Legion. He loved singing and listening to good music, and was in many ward choirs. He was so proud that he had the opportunity to sing in the production of "The Messiah" in Fresno. He was a proud veteran of the Army, and later joined the Marines. He was very proud to serve his country in World War II. He served as a corporal in communications.
ome of his favorite pastimes include: Sports and being with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed the outdoors and painting nature scenes. He loved the friendships he acquired in every community in which he lived. He will be remembered by his kind nature, sound advice, sense of humor and his smiling optimism. He was admired for his kindness in helping with the disadvantaged.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Nielsen Nye, and also by his combined family which includes: Delbert Osborn Nye (Jackie), of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Scott Weldon Nye (Janice), of Fresno; Frank Glen Nye (Sheila), of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Pamela Nye Smith, of Ogden; Stephen J. Smith, of Logan; Christine Jenson (Jim), of Nibley, Utah; Patricia Crook (Jason) and Terry V. Smith (Wendy), both of Hyrum; Bruce Smith (Jody), of Paradise, Utah; and Dennis L. Smith (Diana), of Nibley. He is survived by 31 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Adona (Eugene) Nye, of Ogden, and Loyal (Delbert) Nye, of Kensington, Mass.; and by his loving mother-in-law, Mary A. Nielsen, of Hyrum. He is also lovingly remembered by his lifelong friend, Les. (Marge) Cunningham, and her family, who regarded him as an uncle.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, James Nerden, Ernest Nerden, Eugene S. Nye and Delbert L. Nye; by his sisters, Helen Peterson, Merle Smith and Ellanor Smith; and various cousins.
He will be buried in the Hyrum Cemetery.
