  Anaconda Standard June 18, 1921 Dillon, June 17. - News was recieved in this city today of the death of Mrs. Mary E. Francis, one of the pioneers of this section of the state. Mrs. Francis died in Los Angeles on June 14, after several months of illness. The deceased matron is survived by two sons, Fred Francis of the Big Hole basin and Charles Francis of California. The body will be brought to Wisdom for burial beside the grave of Mr. Francis, who died several years ago. Mrs. Francis, affectionately known as "Grandma" throughout the Big Hole basin, was one of the earliest residents of the valley and for years was the only person with a knowledge of medicine or nursing in the entire valley. On many occasions the pioneer woman went through a bitter night a distance of a score of miles to aid a stricken family, and it was through such work and kindnesses that the Big Hole basin remembers the aged lady. For 35 years Mrs. Francis was a resident of the Big Hole, and it was only in recent years that the failing health of the pioneer woman made it necessary for her to leave the valley. Mrs. Francis was very well known in this city, where for a short time she made her home and where she had visited during the summer for the past several years. A number of the residents of this city will motor to Wisdom to attend the funeral services.
