Martha married Maurice Dale Quaife, continuing to live in Grand Marais, and devoted her life to raising and nurturing her family. Her strong will and dignity, which she retained throughout her challenging illness, were an inspiration to her family.
In her century of life Martha witnessed many changes in the community of Grand Marais, from the construction of the first road traversing the North Shore, and the arrival of the first automobile in town on the steamship America, to participating in Skywatch following World War II and the development of the bustling community we see today. An exceptional baker, Martha thoroughly enjoyed cooking for family and friends. They looked forward to her banana cream pies, coffee bread and dinner rolls. Generations of children enjoyed her Halloween popcorn balls and cookies.
In later years Martha traveled from California to Florida and visited Canada, Europe, and South America. Flower gardening was a special hobby and she was a member of the Garden Club as well as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Martha is preceded in death by her parents; husband Maurice in 1985; brother Raymond; sisters Agnes Nyvold, Helen Dalbec and Ethel Hargrove; grandson Chris Hammer; and greatgrandson Alex Turnquist. A family internment service was held at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais on April 25, 2010.
