Elizabeth A. Quaife, 92, a resident of Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island, formerly of Annawan, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.
Burial will be in the Annawan Cemetery.
Elizabeth A. Quaife was born in Fargo, N.D., on Oct. 25, 1911, the daughter of Leon M. and Dale Wiman Carter. She grew up in Grand Forks, N.D. She graduated from the University of North Dakota where she majored in history and sociology and was active in Alpha Chi Omega social sorority and ADT Debate Club. After graduation, she spent a year studying for her master's degree. She came to Annawan in 1934 to teach at Annawan High School. She married Arthur E. Quaife on April 6, 1935, in Galena, Ill. He preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1972.
She was a member of Annawan Community United Methodist Church for 70 years and was a charter member and past county president of the Henry County Home Extension. She also was a member of the Annawan Women's Club, Annawan Literature Club and Henry County Republican Women's Organization. She was interested in genealogy, travel, theater, bridge and baking.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Frederick Houlton, Rock Island; two granddaughters (and spouses), Pamela J. (Robert) Vizenor, Seattle, Wash., and Kim E. (J. Kevin) Grace, Lake Mary, Fla.; and four great-granddaughters, Emma D. and Annie Rose Vizenor, Seattle, and Nicole E. and Alisa A. Grace, Lake Mary; a brother, Capt. Robert W. Carter, U.S.N. retired, Alexandria, Va.; and 11 nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Capt. George H. Carter, U.S.N. retired.
