Healey, 90, Sturgis, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center. Burial follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Libby was born November 25, 1913 at Plainview, SD to Frank and Eleanor (Spevak) Hlavka. She grew up in Plainview where she graduated from the 8th grade. In 1932 she graduated from Sturgis High School and then attended the Black Hills Teacher's College in Spearfish. She obtained a teachers certificate and spent the next 40 years in educational work in Meade County. She served as the deputy county superintendent of schools from 1941 through 1949. She married Edwin J. Healey June 4, 1949 at Sturgis. Libby tried to make the school experience a pleasurable one so her pupils enjoyed school while learning the necessary things. She always stressed responsibility, honesty, and generosity so pupils would become the useful citizens one would desire them to be. She always said, "Teaching, has been my life". The last 20 years of Libby's teaching career were spent at the Stoneville school. She retired in 1975 and moved to Sturgis. She was a lifelong resident of Meade County. A former student wrote her last week, saying, "I also want to thank you for all you taught me and instilled in me. You have quite a legacy with all of the students' lives you touched". Libby was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, United Presbyterian Women, VFW Women's Auxiliary, American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Meade County Senior Citizens Center. Her hobbies included flower gardening, crocheting, knitting, crafts, and playing cards. Survivors include her many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her, husband Eddie, six brothers, and 4 sisters.
