Bernard R. "Bernie" Eveleth, 85, of Sturgis, S.D., died Tuesday, March 22 at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center. Bernard was born Jan. 22, 1920, to Albert C. and Mertie V. (Long) Eveleth in Witten, S.D. Due to his mother's death in 1923, Bernard moved to Canada to live with his uncle, Harlan Eveleth, and his wife, Louise.
When he was 10 years old, he moved to Central Mende County and attended grade school at Clough. After attending one year of high school in Sturgis, Bernard then moved to Tacoma, Wash. where he lived with his uncle, Orville Eveleth, and his wife, Rose, for one year. Upon returning to SD, he finished high school in New Underwood, graduating in 1939. After graduation, Bernard moved to CA with his father for several months before returning to Cobe's Corner in 1940. In November, he began working at Ft. Meade building barracks. In 1941, he joined the 109th Engineers National Guard serving in World War II. Bernard served 4 1/2 years and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Following his service with the United States Army, he returned to Sturgis. Shortly after that, he purchased and moved to a ranch five miles west of Union Center. On Aug. 9, 1947, Bernard married Helen J. Healey in Sturgis. In 1955, they purchased the Union Center Store and Post Office, which they operated until he returned and moved back to Sturgis in 1980. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion, a member of the Senior Citizens of Sturgis, and a past member of the National Association of Retired US Employees, American Association of Retired Persons and the Moose Lodge. He served as the athletic representative for eight years for the American Legion-VFP Teener Baseball. Bernard was involved with the Macy Baseball team in Sturgis, and he and Helen constructed the fence at Strong Field. Bernard enjoyed woodworking, yard work, playing cards, dancing, cooking and watching baseball, especially when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were playing. He also enjoyed watching their other sports activities.
Bernard was survived by his three daughters, Diana (Richard) Cole of Belen, Pamela (Jim) Cowen of Gillitte, Wyo., and Beverly (Gary) Patterson of Sturgis, S.D.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one step-grand-daughter and two step-great-grandchildren also survive him: Dallis (Kodi) Cowen, Austin and Dalton of Gillette Wyo., Bailey (Stefanie) Cowen of Hooker, Okla., Raeann (Cameron) Guiley and Tayor, of Gillette, Wyo., Laree (Ricky) Baca and Shylyn and Taysen of Belen and Chris Patterson of Gillette, Wyo., a sister, Julia Young of Sturgis, S.D., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernard was preceeded in death by his wife of 48 years, Helen; his parents; his brothers, Frances and Horace; and one sister, Nellie, at infancy.
Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetary.
