  Founder of Birdseye Frozen Foods Clarence Birdseye was born in the United States, in Brooklyn, New Yor k, on 9 December 1886. Whilst studying biology he worked as a field naturalist for the United States government. On a trip to the Arctic he noticed that freshly caught fish placed on the ice froze solid almost immediately, and when thawed and eaten still tasted fresh. Birdseye realised that he had the makings of a business. In September 1922, he formed his own company, Birdseye Seafoods Inc. By 1930 Birdseye was selling 26 different frozen vegetables, fruits, fish and meats. He also patented quick freezing in 1930. The key to quick freezing was the introduction of the multiple plate freezer, which froze packs of food compressed between the plates.
