Kellogg Gannett Birdseye, son of founder of Birds Eye Foods
LAWRENCE _ Kellogg Gannett Birdseye, 85, of Lawrenceville, died Tuesday. He was the son of Clarence Birdseye, founder of Birds Eye Frozen Foods and inventor of the process of quick freezing'' and the quick freeze machine,'' and Eleanor Gannett Birdseye, whose family was among the founders of the National Geographic Society.
Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up in Gloucester, Mass., where his father established his first freezing plant. He moved to Lawrenceville in 1973. A 1938 graduate of Amherst College, he received a master's degree in public administration from Rider College, Lawrence, in 1980. He retired from the state Department of Community Affairs. Mr. Birdseye was an Army captain stationed in India during World War II. After the war, he was national president of the Quartermaster Association, coordinating purchasing supplies and equipment of the Quartermaster Corps. He was a member of the New Jersey Federation of Planning Officials for 27 years and its board for 18 years. He was a councilman and planning board member in Closter and chairman of the Northern Valley Planning Association for 10 years. Mr. Birdseye served 20 years as a member and chairman of several municipal advisory committees in Lawrence. He also was a longtime member of the New Jersey League of Municipalities.
Brother of the late Henry Stinson Birdseye, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gypsy Burton Birdseye; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kellogg Gannett Birdseye Jr. and Ellen Birdseye of Mahwah and Paul Clarence Birdseye of Lawrenceville; a grandson, Jake of Lawrenceville; and a sister, Ruth Birdseye of Albuquerque, N.M.
