LEWISBURG - Carol Kribbs Coder, 89, of 221 S. 12th St., passed away on Friday, April 9, 2010, at Evangelical Community Hospital emergency room, Lewisburg.
She was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Clarion, a daughter of the late Merle and Miriam (Ballentine) Haskell. On June 2, 1939, she married Benton A. Kribbs, who preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1968. On March 26, 1976, she married Charles H. Coder, who survives.
Carol was a graduate of Clarion High School and attended Clarion State Teacher's College.
In her early years of marriage she was a housewife and mother to three sons. In 1955, she began a career as a secretary at Bucknell University, working first in the Admissions Office and later in the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences. In 1989, she retired after 34 years of service.
Carol will be remembered by family and friends for her beauty, generosity, devotion to her husbands, pride in her sons, love for her grand- and great-grandchildren, and courage in times of crisis. As a wife, she was the epitome of devotion in her early years of marriage to Ben Kribbs, a basketball coach and athletic director at Bucknell, and in her second marriage to Charles Coder, an engineering professor and Small Business Development Director at the same institution. When illness struck Ben, she was strong and resourceful, learning to operate the kidney dialysis unit that kept him alive until his untimely death at age 50. After eight years, she married again. This loving, 34-year union with Charley included boating weekends at the Jersey shore, June visits to Hilton Head Island, and cross-country trips to visit Charley's family in California. The Coder home was a stopover for three generations of the Kribbs and Coder clans, and Carol coveted her time with all of her enlarged family. As a mother, Carol was a deeply loving, fiercely loyal advocate for Bob, Bill, and Jack, and their love for her, along with that of her husband, sustained her in her final days. She was a fine lady who will be sorely missed, but her family is both consoled and inspired by the life that she lived.
In addition to her second husband, she is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sharon Kribbs, of Lewisburg, William and Janice Kribbs, of Camp Hill, and Jack and Kerry Kribbs, of Salisbury, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Lynn Miller, of Laurel, Md., and Susan Leirer, of Pleasanton, Calif.; six grandchildren from the Kribbs families, Gretchen Holly, of Mundelein, Ill., Scott Kribbs, of North Carolina, Ross Kribbs, of Aspen, Colo., Carolyn Kribbs of Alexandria, Va., and Benton and Jenny Kribbs, of Salisbury, N.C..; four grandchildren from the Coder families, Jennifer Leirer, of Pleasanton, Calif., Kris Schasker, of Livermore, Calif., Kris Covert and Rachel Forame, both of Laurel Md.; and nine great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Benjamin Schasker, Frankie and Hestin Forame, Ben and Micah Holly, Sawyer and Walden Kribbs, and Cameron Minlend; three sisters-in-law, Marcella Haskell, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Nancy Tharan, of Knox, and Betty Laddin, of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; a cousin, Patricia Hill, of Franklin, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Merle Jr. in 1962 and John Porter (Poe), in 2000, and a sister-in-law, Sarah Bullers, in 2007.
