Harvey J. Haskell, 78, of La Crosse, died on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. He was born on June 5, 1924, in Topeka, Kansas to Harvey E. and Iva (Rogers) Haskell.
Harvey was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre from 1941 to 1945 as an aerial photographer. He married Laura Haskell on Nov. 14, 1947, in Minot, N.D. In early 1948, Harvey and Laura came to La Crosse as part of a construction crew to install the city's first rotary dial telephones. Harvey was then hired by La Crosse Telephone Co. as an installer, and after a career of 26 years he left La Crosse Telephone as Division Manager. He then went to work for Mid-West Telephone Supply of Appleton, Wis., where he was instrumental in the advancement of international sales of telephone equipment. He retired from here in 1985 as office manager. After retirement, Harvey and Laura returned to La Crosse where he contin ued to serve the community for 15 years as a volunteer, installing Life Lines for Franciscan Skemp Medical Center. He also acted as a Starter and a Ranger at Forest Hills Golf Course. Harvey was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and curling and was a role model to fair gamesman ship to his team members as well as opponents. Harvey was a member of the La Crosse Elks Aerie 300 Club, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1920, mem ber and past president of the La Crosse Jaycees, member and past president of the La Crosse Curling Club and also numerous Telephone Industry Organi zations.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Laura; two sons, Gregory (Char) Haskell of Onalaska, Wis. and Doug (Dear friend Molly) Haskell of La Crosse; his step mother, Bertha Jo Haskell of Starkville, Miss.; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Quenten) Brown of La Crosse, Jay Harvey Haskell of La Crosse and Ben and Jake Haskell of La Crosse; one great-granddaughter, Willa Brown; one sister-in-law, Marjorie (Richard) Davis of Ellison Bay, Wis.; one cousin, Marcheta (Bill) Neal of Topeka, Kan.; three nieces, Diane, Debbie and Karen; three nephews, Mark, Paul and Steve; and his long time fishing buddy, Carl (Cully) Rebhan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald E. Haskell; and a sister-in-law, Claire Haskell.
