Funeral services for Chester H. (Chet) Bliss, hotel operator here for more than 30 years, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Algoe-Gundry mortuary, followed by burial in Glenwood.
Mr. Bliss, who was 74, died Tuesday afternoon in St. Joseph hospital, shich he had entered Thursday. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Douglas of Flint and Hascall of Kenosha, Wis., vice president and director of sales of the Nash-Kelvinator corporation, and two grandchildren.
Mr. Bliss operated the Bryant house, once the social center of Flint, for about 30 years and had operated the Dresden hostel, where he had his residence, since 1933.
A native of Flushing, Mr. Bliss was born Sept. 15, 1863. He attended grade school, high school and business college in Grand Rapids and had lived in Flint most of the time since he was 16. He married Gertrude H. Hascall here 45 years ago.
After working in general stores in Flint and Pentwater, Mr. Bliss left merchandising to enter railroad work, in which he was engaged for 28 years. He started as an abstract clerk for the Grand Trunk in Flint. He became cashier in Port Huron and then chief clerk in Durand.
After that he was traveling freight agent for the Lehigh Valley, and then its Michigan agent. He traveled in Europe three times, twice for the railroad ond once for his own pleasure, and also journeyed widely in the United States, Mexico and Canada. He resigned from his position with the Lehigh Valley to buy into the Bryant House.
Mr. Bliss was a member of Washington chapter R.&A.M.; Flint council, R.A.M.; Genesee Valley commandery, Knights Templar; Bay City consistory; Elf Khurojeh Shrine; Rotary club, and St. Paul's Episcopal church. He had been a governor of old Flint Country club.
