Edward Paul "Bud" Bolander, 69, of Midland, passed away Friday afternoon, September 4, 2009 at Mid Michigan Stratford Village while surrounded by his family.
Edward was born to Paul and Eva (Hascall) Bolander on October 26, 1939 in Vassar Michigan. Ed was raised in Bay City, where he attended Central High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1957 and proudly served his country aboard the USS Hornet CVS-12 until 1960. On April 15, 1961, Edward was married to Kay Ann Dutton. Ed and Kay started their family and moved to Midland. Edward opened Bolander Dental Laboratory, where he plied his trade as a Dental Technician until his retirement in 2005.
From an early age, Ed was passionate about the game of hockey. He played for the Bay City Americans as a teenager, and again following his military service. He captained the Tri-City Bruins in the 1970's, and was involved in the Midland Amateur Hockey League as a player and coach. Ed was a lifelong fan, and critic, of the Detroit Red Wings. In 2008, he was inducted into the Bay County Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Bay City Americans Hockey Club. An avid outdoorsman, Ed enjoyed deer hunting and trout fishing, as well as precision shooting at the Midland Sportsmans Club. He held a private pilot's license, was a member of the National Ski Patrol, and also enjoyed sailing and playing his guitar. Edward attended the Midland Reformed Church.
Edward is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Kay Ann, his sons, Randall (Emily) Bolander and Patrick (Carol) Bolander, both of Midland, and a daughter, Carolynn (Thomas) Derrick of Apex, North Carolina. Ed also had five grandchildren, Meagan, Leslie, Kyle, Reilly and Cannon and a great grandson, Carter. Also, his sister, Beverly (John) Webb, brothers, Michael (Pat) Bolander, Paul (Pattie) Bolander and David (Sandy) Bolander, all of Bay City. "Uncle Bud" will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Edward was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Eva Bolander, special uncle Philip Bolander and dear friend Don Perettie.
