He was 63. Bowen, an active Episcopalian, had been program officer in charge of the graduate fellowship program and the revolving loan fund at the Episcopal Church Foundation since September of 1966. Speaking for the board of directors, David E. Giles, president, said: "Van Bowen's untimely death is a great loss to the Foundation. His loyalty and conscientious attention to a number of important duties during his 18 years of service were outstanding. We will sorely miss him and extend our deepest sympathy to his family." Bowen was a member of the Church of the Epiphany in New York City and had served on the vestry there. He was also a member of the ministries commission of the Diocese of New York and had held a number of other posts at the diocesan level. Prior to coming to work at the Foundation, Bowen had worked for the Children's Aid Society, Community Service Society, Empire State Foundation of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges and CARE, Inc. He had served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. during the Second World War and was a graduate, Phi Beta Kappa, of Princeton University. In addition to his work with Foundation grants, Bowen was known as the author of the book, A Vestry Member's Guide. He is survived by his sister, Barbara B. Hoff, of California; and a brother, John G. Bowen, of Lakeville, Conn.
