Neva Hascall, 64, is a retired hospital human-resources manager a nd has lived in the village full time for two years. She said she would devote full time to her duties as councilor and would work to improve services and expand the infrastructure. Her goal is to bring about a more user-friendly community that cares for its residents and welcomes its visitors and to ensure local government remains open so residents know what is going on.

t 10:30 a.m. on the first day of her first-ever trip to Manhattan, Neva Hascall and two friends stand in the line at South Street Seaport's Pier 16, waiting for tickets to the Ground Zero viewing platform.
"I just wanted to make sense of the tragedy," says the retired hospital administrator from New Mexico. "I feel I am visiting a cemetery, to honor the people who died."

Neva Hascall was born Jan. 11, 1936, in Hebron, Neb., to Amy Huber and C. Harry Zimmerman. She died on Feb. 13, 2018 in Mission, Texas at the age of 82.
Her family relocated to Beatrice, Neb., where she attended elementary, junior high and senior high school, graduating in 1954. Upon graduation she enrolled at Nebraska State College at Kearney (now UNK), where she was active in theatre, drill team and her sorority. It was at auditions for the play The Crucible that she met her future husband, Thane Hascall. They were married on Aug. 24, 1957, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beatrice.
While in Beatrice, their family expanded to include three sons, Phillip, Patrick and Robert. Neva spent full time at home with three pre-schoolers. In 1962, the family moved to Atlantic, where Thane began working for the Atlantic School District as speech and English instructor as well as drama director. Neva spent many hours helping with the speech contestants and reading and adding comments to student compositions. When the speech program expanded to debate and competitive forensics, Neva became a respected judge on the debate and student congress circuit in addition to helping with the coaching.
At Atlantic, a fourth son, Andrew, was added to the family. Once again, Neva remained home with a young son as well as her father who resided with the family for a number of years. However she was not limited to those responsibilities; she was a member of the Junior Federated, a past president of Lady Jays, and a relentless political campaigner.
Neva joined the workforce by being a library aid in the high school, and then an advertising salesperson for the Atlantic News Telegraph. She closed out her working career in Atlantic as the human resources director and assistant administrator at Cass County Memorial Hospital.
Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to the mountains of northern New Mexico. They resided in the village of Eagle Nest, where she served first as a village councillor and then as mayor. In addition she was the musician for St. Mel's Catholic Church in Eagle Nest.
In 2010 the couple moved to Mission, Texas, as year round residents.
Neva is survived by her husband Thane, four sons, Phil (Janet) of Atlantic, Pat of Las Vegas, Nev., Rob of Edinburg, Texas, and Drew (Heather) of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren, Adam, Brett, Alexandra, William Francis "Dash," and Jacob Hascall, and two great-grandchildren, Jaelin and Jason Hascall.
