Frank L. Hascall, 75, publisher of The Goshen News for more than three decades, died about 4 a.m. today at his home. He had been in ill health the past few months and death was caused by cancer.
Mr. Hascall, better known to his friends as "Budd,", was majority stockholder of The News Printing Co. Inc., and publisher of the Goshen News since 1954. He had been active in the management of the newspaper until the past few weeks.
Mr. Hascall, 1617 Auten Court, had been a supporter of many community activities and special projects for man years. He was honored for his community service in 1988 when he recieved the Goshen Exchange Club's Book of Golden Deeds Award.
A native of Goshen, Mr. Hascall was born May 22, 1914, the son of Frank N. and Hazel Lacy Hascall. He graduated from Culver Military Academy and attended Duke University. Mr. Hascall served as a captain in the army during World War II, spending some time on Kodiak, an island of the coast of Alaska. He recieved a medical discharge in 1945.
He worked in his early years for his father at thr F. N. Hascall Co. paint and wallpaper store on South Main Street. After his discharge from the army, he worked for Penn Control and Hettrick Mfg. Co. before joining the newspaper in 1953. He became majority owner and publisher in 1954 upon the death of his uncle, Oliver Morton Kinnison, whose father had also owned the business.
He married Rose E. Collins, April 28, 1937, and she died March 30, 1974. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. John (Jane) Gemmer, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth, Goshe; and a sister, Mrs. Jane Hascall Spencer, Woodside Calif.

Newspaper Expands
Under Mr. Hascall's leadership, The Goshen News has expanded and modernized over the years, more than doubling its circulation.
During the observance of the 150th anniversary of the Goshen News in 1987, Mr. Hascall said, "We have attempted to make the newspaper an important part of the community. We have tried to be a voice for the cumminity and support community projects. I believe The News is today one the best daily newspapers in the nation for a paper our size."
Over the years, Mr. Hascall had insisted on being fair to people of the community. "I've tried to keep in the background and do things quietly, I don't think I've done very much, but I've tried hard," he added.
At the 150th anniversary celebration in 1987, Mr. Hascall said, "I am 73 years old and I still get much satisfaction in knowing that the goal of our newspaper is to serve the community the very best we can, and to give the readers a quality product every day."
Family Ownership
Mr. Hascall said he was proud he had been able to continue family ownership over the years. He has been assisted in the management of the newspaper by his daughter, Jane Gemmer, president, and son-in-law, John Gemmer, executive vice president and general manager.
Mr. Hascall and the newspaper have supported many special community projects over the years. He was especially active in support of veterans organizations and was on a five member committee that raised more than $20,000 to renovate the veterans memorial on the east lawn of the courthouse in 1988.
He was a longtime member of the Goshen VFW and helped organize the funding to build trhe present VFW building on West Pike Street.
An active swimmer all his life, Mr. Hascall supported all Goshen swimming programs. He had hosted a number of dinners for the teams. While at Culver Military Academy, Mr. Hascall rowed with an eight-oar shell crew four summers and participated in two years of footballand two years of swimming.
Mr. Hascall helped organize the Jaycee organization in Goshen and served as its first president in 1940. He was also a member of the Maplecrest Country Club, Elks, and Moose lodges.
He recieved the 1988 Book of Golden Deeds award for his contributions, both financially and with volunteer service over many years, to the Jaycee Christmas dinner for needy children, the YM-YWCA in both Goshen and Elkhart, Violett Cemetery board, GHS swimming teams, The Goshen High School band and Goshen Chamber of Commerce.
