KALKASKA - Earl C. Merrill, 89, of Kalkaska, a retired employee of Buick Motor Co., died early Sunday morning, July 18, 1982, at Munson Medical Center. Mr. Merrill spent his early life in the South Haven area, where he attended public schools. In 1909, he moved to Flint where he became a machinist at the Buick Motor Company. On Jan. 7, 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Corporal in Co. F, First Engineers until his discharge on Aug. 19, 1919. He then returned to Flint where he was employed by Buick Motors until his retirement in 1957. He moved to Kalkaska soon after retiring. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska, and Barracks No. 403 of World War 1 Veterans in Traverse City.
Mr. Merrill was born in Allegan County on Oct. 16, 1892, the son of James and Grace Cook Merrill. He was married to Beulah Haskell in Flint on Oct. 9, 1917. She died in 1943.
He married Lydia Haskell in Flint on March 3, 1945, who preceded him in death in 1978.
In 1980, he was united in marriage with Elsie Pahl who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Lewis (Frances) Babcock of Mackinaw City; three step sons, Peter Porath of Traverse City, Larry Porath of Cedar Springs and Frank Porath of Springport; one step daughter, Mrs. Karen Kirk of Mancelona; one grandson and his wife, Steven and Donna Babcock of Naples, Florida; one great granddaughter, Sarah Jane Babcock of Naples, Florida; and 10 step grandchildren.
