Pendleton - The funeral for Wayne Hascall will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Funeral Chapel in Pedleton with vault internment to follow at Olney Cemetery.
Mr. Hascall 73, of West Birch Creek, died Friday April 10, 1998 at his home. Wayne Hascall was born May 13, 1924, at Pendleton, to Percy and Sadie Cable Hascall. Three generations of his ancestors dating back to the 1860's, had settled on West Birch Creek, where Mr. Hascall made his home. He attended school at the Byrd schoolhouse, which today has been restored and moved to the Pendleton Historical Society complex in Pendleton.
He served in the military during World War II training at Camp Claybourne, La. He saw action during the Battle of the Philippines. While in the Philippines, he helped set up a sawmill and logging operation for the manufacture of lumber for the Army. He also ran the mail boat from Manila to the Island of Layte where he was stationed.
When he returned to civilian life after the war, he resumed his career as a logger and truck driver.
On May 29, 1946 he married Eunice Eaton at Pendleton. Mr. Hascall left loggin and took up ranching in 1950. On his first ranch, west of Pilot Rock, he raised wheat and cattle. In 1960 he returned to West Birch Creek where he raised cattle and hay. He was one of the first artificial insemination technicians for Curtiss Breeding Service and raised registered Simmental cattle.
He loved the mountains and was an avid deer and elk hunter, heading up many hunts with family and friends. He also loved to fish and landed a 52 inch sturgeon near Astoria in August 1997.
Survivors include his wife Eunice, at the home; children, Lon of Stanfield, Allan and Neva, both of Pilot Rock; brothers John of Condon, and Gilbert of Pilot Rock, and a sister Velma Cross of Pilot Rock; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry in 1979; his father Percy, in 1967, and his mother, Sadie in 1986.
