  East Oregonian (Pendleton, OR) May 14, 2011 PENDLETON — Barbara Jeanne (Merkling) Furniss, 84, of Pendleton died Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at St. Anthony Hospital surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at Olney Cemetery. Mrs. Furniss was born Oct. 13, 1926, in Pendleton, the first child of Daphna (Hascall) and Donald Merkling. She grew up on West Birch Creek in the Blue Mountains. She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1944 and married Wendel Vernel Furniss in 1946. Her best friends were Liane Mele and Elita Chesnut. She was known for her energy, humor and love of travel. Her granddaughter Laura was her companion through her final years of life. Survivors include her children Julian and Linda Furniss; brother Berk Merkling; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Wendel; son Randal Furniss; brother Roland Merkling; and sister Mona West.
