PENDLETON -- Wendel Vernel Furniss, 80, of Pendleton, died Feb. 20, 2006, at Walla Walla Veterans Hospital. A private family service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton.
Mr. Furniss was born June 1, 1925, in Flatfoot, Idaho, to Thomas and Della Parsons Furniss. He graduated from Gem State Academy near Caldwell, Idaho. He joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Guam during World War II and was called to duty for a year during the Korean War.
Mr. Furniss married Barbra Merkling on Aug. 26, 1946, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
He was owner of a Chevron Standard Station, a bookkeeper for the Cummins Oregon Diesel Company for fifteen years and then worked as secretary for the Eagles Lodge for twenty years. He spent his leisure time hunting, fishing and reading.
Mr. Furniss was preceded in death by his parents; son Randall D. Furniss; three brothers; and six sisters.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Linda A. Furniss of Pendleton; son Julian V. Furniss of Pendleton; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
