Candidate drops out of Kent County Commission 4th District race. Karl Hascall (age 42) announced on Monday that he is pulling out of the August 6 Republican primary, due to family and business issues. It is too late to take his name off the ballot, so he asked people not to vote for him. Others running for the seat are Democrat Harry Kooyman, and Republicans Richard Davies, Gary Rolls and Matt Nygren.

U.S. GOVERNMENT LAUDS EMPLOYEE'S HALF-CENTURY OF SERVICE

Just as the city of Dallas begins to try to mold a more efficient municipal machine from its bureaucracy, word comes from Washington that Dallas lawyer Karl Hascall has been named Texas state coordinator for the bipartisan, non-profit Citizens Against Government Waste.
Hascall, class of 1985 of the University of Denver College of Law, says that "as of
six months ago we only had about 50 national members in the Dallas area and about 400 statewide.' And he says the Texas branch hasn't scheduled any meetings or events "because we did just start in Texas, but we are going to have a booth at the state Republican convention this weekend.'
While the group's efforts in Dallas will focus on increasing membership and interest, Hascall says that nationally "the main emphasis is to get the Grace Commission report (the President's Private Sector Survey on Price Control) implemented.' In the report, private-sector managers looked at government management, procurement and personnel practices and made suggestions for curbing costs, Hascall says.

ADA TOWNSHIP -- Friends and family of Karl Hascall were in disbelief Thursday, following word the prominent businessman and former Kent County GOP chairman killed himself on property he owned. Kent County Sheriff's deputies were called about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday to a pole barn near Two Mile Road and Honey Creek Avenue NE. Hascall, 48, was found dead from a single gunshot, Lt. Kevin Kelley said. "Karl was just a great friend, not only to me but to all of us involved in politics and business," said Scott Greenlee, a fellow GOP activist and longtime friend of Hascall. "This is unexpected, quite a shock." In addition to his political involvement, the Ada Township resident was known as co-owner of Hascall Steel Co. in Grandville and for tireless civic commitments, from the former First of America Classic golf tournament to the West Michigan Variety Club to Grand Rapids Youth Commonwealth.
His brother, Dag Hascall, said Hascall suffered a dramatic decline in health in recent months and was frustrated in his inability to conquer it. He said doctors diagnosed him with a combination of mononucleosis and depression, the latter condition growing worse over time. "He had kind of a rollercoaster of emotions, getting progressively deeper and deeper over the last couple months. "He was frustrated with the fact that he had no energy levels and his concentration was failing him. It was something he was seeking help for. "He just caught himself on a bad day." Hascall was found on a 42-acre parcel he and his wife, Susan, bought in 2005 to raise horses.
Hascall served as chairman of the county GOP from December 2006 to June, when he stepped down because of his health problems, according to Greenlee. Greenlee recalled that he put the same energy into civic causes as he did business and politics. "A lot of people will work but won't donate a lot," Greenlee said. Greenlee said Hascall would show up before dawn along with other volunteers at the First America golf tournament to empty trash cans around the course. Hascall served as event co-chairman in 1998. "Karl would do the dirty jobs and never complain. "He was also very generous about supporting it through it business. Just about any type of charitable dinner, you would see the Hascall Steel table there," Greenlee said. Mike Johns, office administrator for Youth Commonwealth, said Hascall was a fixture on the board since 1993. For him, it was much more than another board seat to fill, Johns said. "He was a staunch supporter of Youth Commonwealth and Camp O'Malley," Johns said, referring to the Alto summer camp for disadvantaged youth. "He was a fundraiser. He was a promoter for us. He took a very proactive position on the board and helped any way he could." Johns said Hascall stepped down from the board in late 2007.
In addition to his brother and wife, Hascall is survived by his parents, Wayne Hascall and Kathryn Hascall.
