  Find-a-Grave Melvin J. Quimby, 77, of Grants Pass died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Three Rivers Community Hospital. He was born Melvin Jim Quimby, Jan. 12, 1925, in Stockton, Calif., where he graduated from Edison High School. From 1943 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman first class. On Nov. 25, 1949, in Stockton, he married Vera Lucille Jones, who survives. While living in Stockton, he worked for the Nabisco Company in delivery, and for Rawson Racks. In 1955, he moved to Grants Pass, where he worked for Southern Oregon Plywood for 20 years. Prior to his retirement in 1988, he worked for the city of Grants Pass in maintenance. He was a member of the American Legion, served in the Boy Scouts of America for 40 years as a Scoutmaster and was Scout commissioner for Troop 73. Among his many awards, he received the Silver Beaver, and along with his wife, the John Bastian award. Since 1980, he and his wife hosted foreign exchange students and teachers. He volunteered with the Soroptomist Club and many other organizations. He enjoyed fishing, camping, deer hunting in October and traveling around the world. His CB handle was "Road Runner Coyote," and he was known for his pickup truck sporting a coyote and horns. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Gwen Quimby of Medford and Virginia Quimby-Schick of Beaverton; a son, Michael Quimby of Merlin; and two grandchildren.
