  Foster's Daily Democrat (Dover, NH) November 13, 2013 ELIOT, Maine - Margaret E. Place, 96 of Beech Road in Eliot died on November 10, 2013 at her home with family, following a courageous battle against cancer. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on January 27, 1917 she was a daughter of Percy E. ("Pop") and Sylvia B. (Haskell) Burgess. She was raised on Blossom Street in the Puddle Dock neighborhood of Portsmouth and attended local schools graduating from Portsmouth High School with the class of 1935. She furthered her education attending business school. Directly out of school she began to break through the perceived ceiling of working women. She began working in the Pentagon in Washington DC in what was thought of at the time as a mans job. She continued working upon return to the Seacoast for the US Government at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a Captains Assistant and later for Commander's Christiensen and Hansen. She retired in 1977. Margaret was predeceased by her husband James A. Place, son, James H Place, sister Arlene Grant, brother Percy Burgess and granddaughter, Jennifer Place. Her survivors include her sister, Barbra Earle of York, daughters Sylvia Bubar and husband Allen, of Dewey Arizona, Margaret Murray of Kittery, Bette Orr of Kittery, Linda and husband Kenneth Bynion of Eliot, Susan Milinski and husband Frank of Berwick and son Jerre Place and wife Donna of Lebanon. Also surviving Margaret is her daughter-in-law Susan Place of Berwick, 20 grandchildren, 33 great grand children and 9 great great grandchildren. Margaret married her husband of 45 years, James Place and together they made a home in Eliot and raised a family. She gained the position of "Excellent Chief" of Pythian Sisters in the Knights of Pythias in Portsmouth. Margaret was an avid reader and always enjoyed a trip whether around town or to any of the casinos she enjoyed visiting. She enjoyed rug hooking and was the centerpiece of the yearly family reunions at Dead Duck Inn in Eliot starting the planning just after the event was over for the next year.
