BARNSTABLE - Robert Fredrick Kirby, 78, a retired home builder, died yesterday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a long illness. He was the husband of Marie (Day) Kirby, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage in July of this year, and of Mary Josephine (O'Neil) Kirby, who died in 1947.
Born in Templeton, Mr. Kirby lived in Leominster for 25 years before moving to the Cape in 1971. He was a furniture craftsman and a retired custom home builder.
A World War II Army veteran, he served in Company D, 112th Infantry, in France and Germany; landed on Omaha Beach six days after the D-Day invasion began; participated in the liberation of Paris in 1945; and received a Purple Heart, Good Conduct and campaign medals.
Before his illness, he loved fishing, shellfishing, woodworking and oil painting. Most of all, he enjoyed his grandchildren, all of whom called him "Bumpa." He was a member of the Federated Church of Hyannis.
Surviving besides his wife are four daughters, Arlene Richner of Hingham, Kathleen Milholo and Roberta Kirby, both of Hyannis, and Jennifer Laverdy of Burke, Va.; a sister, Olive Comeau of West Yarmouth; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
