Ronald Leslie Nelson, 55, passed away peacefully at home in St. George, Utah on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. This special child of God was born to K. LeRoi & Ina Shepherd Nelson on September 12, 1953 in Logan, Utah.
He lived in Lafayette, Indiana and Detroit, Michigan before the family moved to Provo in 1956. He lived in the Oak Hills area for 34 years before moving to a mountain home just below Sundance near the family cabin. He there attended the Provo Canyon Ward where he served as the Home Teaching Secretary for the Elders Quorum and later kept track of the phone directory and sent birthday cards. Other wards he attended included the BYU 5th when his dad was Bishop, the Oak Hills 4th, the Oak Hills 6th, the Oak Hills 8th, and the Morningside 7th Wards. He has served in many church positions such as an Assistant to the Bishop, Assistant Clerk, Librarian, and Sacrament Program Distributor. He enjoyed attending the temple.
He had several jobs where he made close friends, including five years at the MTC mailroom. He always wanted a business of his own, and had his office set up for new business ventures complete with business name, cards and stationary he designed. He owned several computers and loved the many things he could do with them. He traveled alone to Seattle and Albuquerque to visit friends. Through the years he participated with the RAH group and took several trips with them. When he was younger, Ron won many Special Olympic awards. He traveled with his family completing visits to all 50 states and visited many historic church and national sites. He spent six months at College Station, Texas.
He attended Corvallis High School in Oregon graduating with the senior class of 1972. Returning to Provo he attended seminary classes at Provo High School. He had his own apartment before contracting double pneumonia, spending the whole month of February 1988 in the hospital, which left him with permanent lung damage (pulmonary fibrosis), which he lived with for the last 21 years. A decline in function in the last few years made it increasingly necessary to have continuous oxygen.
Ron loved music of all kinds but especially Broadway musicals. He played the piano and a little organ for his enjoyment and loved his piano instructors. In 1993, the family moved to St. George to spend the winter while they continued to spend summers in Sundance. He had a great memory for numbers and had a special interest in animals. He loved collecting towels, knickknacks, plates, and found joy in decorating his walls with a theme and rearranging his furniture. Most of all he loved people and they loved him!
He is survived by his parents; one sister, Karalee (David) Metcalf; two brothers, Harold Nelson and David (Kayleen) Nelson. One sister and one brother preceded him in death.
Burial will be in the Logan, Utah Cemetery.
