Don Brooks passed away on Monday, August 1, 2011 with his wife, Maxine, and children, Paula, Craig (Irene), Annette and Kevin (Pam) at his side. He was 87 years old.
He was born the eldest of Don and Velma (Haskell) Brooks on July 23, 1924 in Benton City, Wa. He is survived by his brother, Pat (Jeannette), of Everett, Wa., and Sharon Shire (Dick) of Indianapolis, Indiana. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bobby.
Don married Maxine, nee Rayhill in Richland, Wa. on November 23, 1946, shortly after WWII ended. They were married for 64 years. He served in the US Navy in the South Pacific during the war. He worked as an engineer at the Hanford Atomic Energy Plant for 20 years. He moved his young family to Yakima in 1957. In his 60's, he retired as an engineer with Chubb Pacific and the US Naval Reserve.
He is survived also by his grandson, Bryan Peters of Espanola, NM, granddaughters, Brandi Graff of Woodburn, Or., Nichole Brooks of Redmond, Or., and Dawn Rust of Boise, Id. He also has many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Don was known by his family and friends as a quiet man, who seldom lost his temper; a man who often worked 2-3 jobs during the hard times. He was a peaceful man, who believed that anger most often doesn't solve problems. He cherished his family, and found God in the beauty of nature. He was a beloved man and will be missed by all who knew him, including Fran, and best buddy, Bob Sweesy.
