  The Rapid City Daily Journal August 5, 1958 Funeral services have been scheduled for Lydia Ballard, 78 year old Rapid resident who died at a local hospital Sunday following a lingering illness. Final rites will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Behrens Mortuary. Rev. Walz officiating. Burial will be in the White Owl Cemetery. Born March 27, 1880 in Tama County, Iowa, Miss Ballard came to South Dakota in 1908 with her parents who homesteaded in Meade County, Iowa, near White Owl. She attended schools in Washta, Iowa, teachers college at Storm Lake, Iowa; Northern Stage Teachers College in Aberdeen, and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. For 30 years, Miss Ballard taught school in Iowa and South Dakota. She came to Rapid City in 1932, and is a member of the First Presbyterian Church here. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Lola Simmons, and Elsie Ballard, both of Rapid City; one brother, Owen Ballard, of Washta, Iowa, and three nieces and three nephews.
