Donald J. Opfer, 91, of Oak Harbor, died early Tuesday morning, December 11, 2007, in St. Charles-Mercy Hospital, Oregon. Donald was born November 28, 1916, in Graytown, Ohio, to Fred W. and Elizabeth (Suhrbier) Opfer.
He was a 1934 graduate of Elmore High School. During WWII he served in the US Air Force, and was a member of the Genoa American Legion.
On May 3, 1941, in Elliston, Ohio, he married June R. Haskill, who preceded him in death February 28, 2003. He then married Kathy Lovell in Fremont, Ohio, on December 19, 2004, and she survives.
Donald owned and operated Opfer's Lawn Mower Service and Power Equipment. For many years he had worked at the Ottawa County Soil & Water Conservation, where he was named Cooperator of the Year in 1978. He built several roads and bridges and also did tile work for many years for the Harder Brothers. He co-invented a culti-mulcher, which worked in lieu of plowing, and also had the first pump station in Ottawa County. Donald was a member of Port Clinton Baptist Church, where he and June donated the church's steeple in 2000. Donald loved Christian television, particularly the Trinity Broadcasting Network. He enjoyed working in his yard and especially loved taking care of his trees.
His survivors include his wife, Kathy; son, Delton D. (Sandra) Opfer of Toledo; stepdaughter, June Rosalie Smith, at home; granddaughter, Tanya (John) Skouroukos of Toledo; two great-grandchildren, John and Vanessa Skouroukos; sister, Evelyn Schimming of Elliston, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, June; infant grandson, Chad Opfer; brothers, Harold, Vernon, Jerry, Norman, Arnold, and Milton, and sister, Elinor.
