  Oneida Dispatch April 13, 2006 SHERRILL - John G. Haskell, 89, Ocean Drive, Juno Beach, Fla., and West Hamilton Avenue, Sherrill, died Tuesday evening, April 11, 2006, in Palm Beach Hospital, after suffering a coronary attack at his home. Born in Oneida, on Aug. 7, 1916, he was the son of Edward L. and Cathryn Golden Haskell. A lifelong resident of the Oneida area, Jack was a graduate of Oneida High School and attended St. Lawrence University. He married Virginia Schocke in St. John's Episcopal Church, Oneida, on Feb. 17, 1939. Mrs. Haskell died on May 1, 1994. For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Haskell resided in Florida for the majority of the year, spending summers in central New York. Prior to his retirement in December 1991, Jack served as the President and Chairman of the board of directors of the Oneida Savings Bank - a career that spanned 55 years of service. His career in banking began in 1936. He was elected secretary-treasurer in 1953; vice-president in 1960; president and trustee in 1962 and chief executive officer in 1979; and chairman of the board from 1973 until 1992. During his career in banking, Jack saw the assets grow from $6 million to over $130 million. In the savings bank industry, Jack served as the Chairman of Group II of the Savings Bank Association of New York, a director of the Savings Bank Association of New York State, including chairman of its Mortgage and Real Estate Committee, and director for two terms of Savings Bank Trust Company and Institutional Securities Corporation. He participated in various civic organizations, including the Oneida Hospital Foundation as one of the originators and serving as the first president, a former director of the Oneida Chamber of Commerce, a director and past president of the Oneida Community Chest, a director of the Madison County Boy Scout Council, a former trustee of Cazenovia College, a member of the Maroon Council at Colgate University, a member and former vestryman of St. John's Episcopal Church, past secretary and life member of the Oneida Elks Lodge No. 767 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a member of the American Legion, Oneida Post 169, and a member and former Big Chief of the Powhatan Club. In 1998, Jack received the Distinguished Service Award from the Greater Oneida Chamber of Commerce. A veteran of World War II, Jack served with the United States Navy. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John E. and Pattie Haskell of Manlius; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Rick Lounsbury of Cazenovia; his companion of several years, Jean Gordon; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Edward R. and Gerry Haskell and Vera Haskell-Amundson, all of Oneida; five grandchildren, Kiersten Warndorf, Julie Ford, Tory Whitlock, Pieper Stover, and Tucker Lounsbury; eight great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Haskell, on July 10, 1989.
