Services for former Oneida Postmaster Robert L. Haskell, 67, of 451 Broad St., who died Monday at Oneida City Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. John's Episcopal Church in Oneida. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Haskell was a life resident of Oneida. He retired in 1979 after 30 years as postmaster of the Oneida Post Office, a position he was appointed to in 1949 by President Harry S. Truman.
After his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, Mr. Haskell worked for Haskell Real Estate Associates.
Mr. Haskell was long active with the Democratic Party. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the Madison County Democratic Committee. He was a member and former chairman of the Oneida City Democratic Committee and a member of the executive committee of the state Democratic Committee. Mr. Haskell also was a member of the James Hanley for Congress Committee and chaired the Nancy Larraine Hoffmann for Senate Committee.
Mr. Haskell served 20 years as chairman of the Oneida Youth Bureau Commission, which during his tenure created the Mt. Hope and Chapman pools, the winter skating program and the consulting psychologists program. He served on the state Division for Youth under former Govs. Averill Harriman and Nelson Rockefeller.
Mr. Haskell served as public safety commissioner of the city of Oneida in 1987, and that same year co-chaired the Oneida City Hospital Task Force.
Mr. Haskell was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a member and former chief of the Powhatan Club and a member and former president of the state Football Association. He also was a member of the Oneida Lodge, BPOE, and the Loyal Order of the Moose. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, Mr. Haskell was a member of Oneida Post, American Legion.
Mr. Haskell received the Oneida Junior Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year Award in 1956.
Surviving are his wife, the former Vera Presley; a son, Edward P. of Oneida; two brothers, Edward R. of Oneida and John G. of Sherrill; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
