Evelyn Mae Stevens, 95, of 55 Harris Road, Nashua, died early Monday morning, April 2, 2001, at a local nursing home after a brief illness. Mrs. Stevens was born Dec. 23, 1905, in Nashua, daughter of the late Leslie F. and Mae A. (Baker) Haskell. She was a lifelong resident of Nashua and lived at 2 Charlotte St. for a number of years.
She began her working career at Nashua Corp. during World War II. She then worked for Sprague Electric Co. and Sanders Associates. Also, she worked as a secretary at Stellos Electric and for John Scontsas Insurance Agency. Before retirement, she worked at the former Almy's Department Store. Mrs. Stevens was very active in civic affairs and was a member and past secretary of the Nashua Garden Club, where she was active in many workshops using dried flowers. Also, she had been a member of the Nashua Choral Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a longtime member of Main Street United Methodist Church, and she sang in its choir for many years. Mrs. Stevens attended schools in Nashua and attended an art school in New York.
She was predeceased by a son, Donald William Stevens, who died Aug. 12, 1995; three brothers, Frank, William and Leslie Haskell; and two sisters, Phyllis Brodeur and Rachel A. Ottman.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Mervin E. Jr. and Betty Stevens of Walpole, David A. and Bobbi Stevens of Douglasville, Ga., and Henry and Carole Stevens of Nashua; three daughters, Barbara J. Katsiaficas of Nashua, Marilyn M. Schofield of Merrimack and Carol L. Berry of Litchfield; a sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Charles Hughes of Naples, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy M. Haskell of Nashua; 26 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends.
