Lionel Haskell was a twenty-three year old messboy (kitchen helper) on board the Dollar Steamship Line's transpacific ocean liner President Hoover. On August 30, 1937 the President Hoover was at anchor in the Yangtze River near Shanghai, China when she was attacked by a group of Chinese warplanes that had mistaken the ship for the Japanese liner Asama Maru. This was during the Sino-Japanese War. Like many on board the ship, Haskell had rushed to the open decks to see what was happening and struck by in the stomach by flying shrapnel which left him severely wounded. Haskell succumbed to his injuries on August 31, 1937 as the President Hoover sailing at full speed between Shanghai, China and Kobe, Japan. He was embalmed in Kobe and then returned to the President Hoover for the trip back to San Francisco. Passengers on board the ship visited his coffin and brought the unfortunate young man flowers and even took up donations for his family. Upon the arrival of the President Hoover in San Francisco on September 15, 1937 Haskell's coffin was carried off the ship by six of his fellow crewmen to a waiting hearse were he was then taken to the Cypress Lawn Cemetery. His head stone was paid for by the donations of the President Hoover's crew. _____ The Ottowa Journal October 2, 1937 Toronto, Oct. 1 - Max Alfred, Toronto lawyer, announced today indemnity of $100,000 would be asked for the death of Lionel Haskell, 21, killed in the Sino-Jap clash in Shanghai.
