WESTMORELAND, N.H. -- Merrill H. "Mezzy" Barber Jr., 59, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 4, 2007, after a fall at his home. He was born on Feb 10, 1948, in Brattleboro, Vt., the only son of Merrill H. and Bernice (Waite) Barber.
He spent his youth in Brattleboro and was educated in the Brattleboro schools. He graduated from Brattleboro Union High School, Class of 1966. Soon after graduation, Mr. Barber enlisted in the Army where he was assigned to the 1st Air Calvary in the Vietnam war. From 1966 to 1969, he served his country with distinction and honor as a sharpshooter and received the Good Conduct, National Defense, Vietnam Service and Vietnam Campaign medals. After he was honorably discharged, Mr. Barber went to Boston University where he received a B.A. degree in 1973.
Mr. Barber was employed by the Monadnock Shopper for 16 years. He used his unique skills in art and business as an advertising executive. He was well known in the advertising community and will be missed by all his colleagues. He was one of the founders of the Keene Area North Branch Bowmans Club. He was an avid hunter and loved to be on the golf course. He also enjoyed drawing and painting. As a young boy, he was a ski jumper, following in the footsteps of his father, who was a two-time Harris Hill Ski Jump champion.
Mr. Barber is survived by four daughters, Heather Kathleen Barber of Telluride, Colo., Caron Patricia Barber of Portland, Maine, Amanda Joan Barber of Phoenix, and Alisha May Barber of Spofford. He also leaves behind his former wife of 20 years, Anita J. (Lewis) Barber of Spofford.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Cheshire Family Funeral Home , 46 South Winchester St., West Swanzey. The Rev. Craig Fisher of Beth-El Bible Church in Surry, will officiate. Burial will take place in the family lot at Morningside Cemetery in Brattleboro. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
