CHIEFLAND- Leon "Lee" Bernard Dubey Jr., 74, died at his home in Chiefland Dec. 10, 2010. He is best known in the area for owning and operating Dubey's Pet World with his wife Phyllis.
He was born Oct. 19, 1936 in New York City, N.Y. to Leon and Dorothy Dubey Sr. He attended Brown University. He and his wife moved to the Chiefland area 15 years ago from Little Rock, Calif.
He was of the Protestant faith. He wrote and had published a book called No Need to Count and published many technical articles. He was one of the aerospace pioneers and had a significant role in many of the space program missions, including Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle missions. He also helped with the B-1 bomber and was instrumental in the deployment of the "Star Wars" anti-satellite program (SDI). He enjoyed gardening, especially Bonsai trees, fishing, traveling and mountain climbing.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Phyllis Dubey; son Leon Dubey III (Ilona) of Jupiter; daughters Linda Ditzig of Jacksonville, Donna Jenson (Shawn) of Stuart; brothers Paul Dubey (Judy) of Ormond Beach, Bruce Dubey (Barbara) of Melbourne; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild along with many nieces and nephews.
The family plans to hold a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation at National Kidney Foundation 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016 Phone: (800) 622-9010.
