MELVIN - Theron D. "T.D." Thackeray, 90, of Melvin died at 8:25 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 28, 1997) at Gibson Community Hospital Annex.
His parents, three brothers, Elton D., Clayton D. and Roy D., and a nephew, Wendell Thackeray, preceded him in death.
He was born May 19, 1906, in Melvin, the second son of Amos and Hilda (Haskell) Thackeray. He married Marguerite Anna Howk March 25, 1928, in Melvin. She died Nov. 1, 1981.
Mr. Thackeray was a member of United Methodist Church, Melvin. He was a member and secretary of the board of education of the Melvin Community School Unit. He served as village clerk and later as trustee. He was a charter member of Melvin Lions Club, member of Roberts Community Club and a 50-year member and chief of the Melvin Fire Department. He served as a Mason officer and University of Illinois advisory board member.
He learned to telegraph and was later an agent-operator for the IC filling extra jobs from Peotone to Edgewood, Pontiac to Minonk, Gilman to Clinton and the Bloomer Line. He worked at the central wire office in Champaign and the car dispatcher's office.
A dominant aspect of his life was being a member of Ford County Fair Association since 1932,serving as president from 1937 to 1981. He and Marguerite published the local newspaper starting in1932 for about 50 years. He went from setting display type by hand to the linotype, compu writer then computer.
