Willard L. Haskell, Jr., 77 of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Barrington, an employee of the Department of Defense with the Apollo Inertial Guidance System in Wisconsin, and chief of quality control in the missile systems for Hughes Aircraft in Tucson. He was the husband of Elizabeth (McLeary) Haskell.
Born in Strafford, Conn., a son of the late Willard and Ruth (Swanson) Haskell, he lived in Barrington until 1948, and in New York, Wyoming, Montana and Milwaukee, Wisc., before moving to Tucson in 1969.
Mr. Haskell was a 1940 graduate of Barrington High School and attended Northeastern University in Boston. He was a member of the Palestine Shrine in Providence, where he played trombone. While in high school he attended the former Rhode Island Radio School at night, and had a powerful shortwave receiving set in his home. He passed his commercial radio operator's examination before joining the Army in 1940.
He was a four year Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, and served in the Philippines as an aerial radioman. He was later transferred to the Signal Corps shortly before Pearl Harbor, and was instructing in the Army radio school in Manila when war was declared. After the Japanese capture of the Philippines, he was taken prisoner and later survived 28 months of captivity in concentration camps when his prison ship, heading for the mainland, was torpedoed. He was one of the very few American prisoners who survived to swim to safety.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Ronald S. Haskell, of Denton Texas; two daughters, Dayle Antram and Janet Crowson, both of Tucson; a brother, Frederick Haskell in Massachusetts; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
