RUMFORD - John L. Ames Sr., 73, of South Rumford Road and formerly of Hollis, died Thursday, July 22, 2004 at a Rumford hospital. Born September 16, 1930 in Dover-Foxcroft, he was a son of Dwight V. and Gracie M. (Mitchell) Ames Sr.
John had a versatile career. Subsequent to his discharge from the Navy, he completed a four-year apprenticeship, resulting in an eight-year tenure of maintenance/millwright foreman and as a master electrician and operated a contracting business for some time. Finally, in his secular endeavor, he was employed by the Department of Defense-U.S. Navy, as an instructor of electrical theory, nuclear reactor plant repair and hazardous gases/materials. He retired due to ill health.Additionally, John was an ordained minister and worked for a number of years as pastor of the Kennebunk Landing Chapel.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Haskell Ames of Rumford, who was his devoted and faithful caregiver and soul mate.

Also surviving are sons, John Jr., of Kennebunk, Michael and Timothy, both of Kennebunkport; a daughter, Lesley of Kenduskeag; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A period of visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m., Monday, July 26, 2004 at the Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Pastor Calvin Rogers will officiate. Interment will be in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery, Hollis.
