  "Of the latter war (1812) there resides in the Town of Le Claire, Scott County, the following old soldiers: James Haskell, seventy-five years of age, was a member of the United States Artillery, under General Wilkinson. Mr. Haskell had a son, George, who was killed in the war of 1862, in Missouri." Annals of Iowa, Volume 7, page 303. _____ Served in War of 1812 James Haskell 387. Born 1795 at Standish, Maine. Parent's names not recorded. James, described as a husbandman, aged 18 years, mustered on 23 February 1813. He joined Captain McIntosh's Company of the 1st United States Regular Light Artillery. James served Gun No.2 at the Battle of French Creek on Lake Ontario against the British fleet on 30 October 1813. He was again in action at French Mills on 1 November 1813, when he took over Gun No.1 after round shot killed the gunner. James was discharged at Plattsburg, New York, on 31 May 1815. He was granted Bounty Land Warrant No. 7855-160-12, certificates: S09956, SC113911, Old War File 27545. James resided at Le Claire, Scott County, Iowa. On 20 October 1837, James married Mary Gordon, a widow of Rock Island County, Iowa. James died on 3 December 1884 aged eighty-nine, at Randolph, Fremont County, Iowa.
