Richard "Dick" Hollien passed away on July 5th at Buckley Healthcare in Greenfield, two weeks before his 96th birthday.
Mr. Hollien was born in Malden, Mass. on July 19, 1915, the son of Charles L.R. Hollien and Christine (Scarborough) Hollien. His education took place in Malden, Mass. schools as well as Providence, R.I. and he attended Rhode Island State College.
Richard met his wife Miriam (Shaw) Hollien in Greenfield where he had taken a job; they were married for 62 years before she passed away in 2004.
He was predeceased by a son, Charles who passed away in 1999.
He is survived by a brother Edwin of Fanwood, New Jersey. He also leaves a daughter, Lynn (Hollien) Young and her husband Robert of North Falmouth, a daughter-in-law Francis Hall and her husband Richard of Charlemont. In addition, "Baba" leaves grandchildren Charles William Hollien, of Portland, Maine, and Gregory & Melanie Young of North Falmouth.
Richard spent a 39-year career at the Millers Falls Company as a Tool & Product Design & Development Engineer, and was Past Chapter Chairman of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Detroit, Mich.
Upon his retirement, he pursued many hobbies which included travel, often in a camping trailer, photography and woodworking. With a house situated on the Deerfield River in Shelburne Falls, Richard would monitor the rivers ups and downs and even traveled on it in a homemade paddle-wheel boat. For many winters he traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he enjoyed a renewed passion for playing golf. Crossword puzzles were a daily routine until the time of his death.
He was the curator for the Shelburne Falls Historical Museum and also became a weekly fixture as a volunteer at the Village Information Center in Shelburne Falls, sharing his love for the village. Richard was a member of the Masons and Past Master of the Mountain Lodge A.F. & A.M. Also, he was involved in town committees serving as a Commissioner of the Fire & Water District and three terms as Sewer Commissioner. He was also a charter member and Director of the Shelburne-Buckland Community Center and a Director/Trustee of the Sawyer Fund for several years. He was a parishioner of the Trinity Church in Shelburne Falls.
Richard was a World War Two Army veteran achieving the rank of sergeant while serving in the European theater assigned to the 65th Infantry Division and the 260th Regiment. He saw action during the war and received many medals and citations including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Following the war, he joined and was involved in the VFW Post 8503 in Shelburne Falls and the DAV Scott-Vetterling Post 33 in Greenfield.
The Arbors Senior Living in Greenfield was Richard's home for awhile and for the past two years he has been a resident of Buckley Healthcare in Greenfield. The family is grateful for the wonderful care he received.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Aug. 13, at 3 p.m. at the Trinity Church in Shelburne Falls. Please honor his memory by contributing to one of the many organizations he was involved in or thinking of him as you enjoy the village of Shelburne Falls.
