Mrs. Ruth S. Cousineau, 90, formerly of 28 Ober Street, Massena, died Saturday (February 21, 2009) evening at the Connecticut Baptist Home, Meriden, Connecticut, where she had been a resident for the past 4 years. She moved to Connecticut 5 years ago to be near her daughter.
Ruth was born September 4, 1918 in Massena, the daughter of Richard A. and Anna Hepburn Squires. She graduated from Massena High School in 1936. She graduated at the top of her class from St. Lawrence University in 1940, where she was a classmate of Kirk Douglas. While in college, she was proficient in French, Latin, and German. She married Wilfred J. "Cooney" Cousineau on April 30, 1943, which was later Blessed at St. Mary's Church. He predeceased her on December 10, 1989.
She worked as a clerk at Alcoa for 10 years and later with the Erdman and Hosley on the St. Lawrence Seaway for several years. She loved to knit, do crossword puzzles, reading, traveling, and was always available to people, making them feel comfortable. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Massena and the United Methodist Women, where she served as the treasurer during the 60's and 70's.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail Ann Cousineau and her husband, Robert Wright, Middletown, CT; her son and daughter-in-law, Gary R. and Bonnie Cousineau, Mitchell, IN; three grandchildren, Adam Wright, Middletown, CT, Keri and Derick Witty, Avon, IN, Bob LaDue, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Jackson and Garrett; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by an infant son, Gary in 1946; three brothers, Roy H. Squires on June 14, 1985, Bernard C. Squires on October 1, 1991, and Kenneth S. Squires on January 10, 1995; and three additional siblings in infancy.
