Kenneth LaVerne Haskell passed away peacefully at his home in Canon City, Colorado on May 30, 2012. A celebration of life funeral service for Canon City and former Lamar resident will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the Peacock Family Chapel with Reverend Kathy Leathers of the Holly United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Veteran's Section of the Fairmount Cemetery with full military honors under the auspices of the Lamar V.F.W. Post # 3621 and the Lamar American Legion post #71. Visitation for Ken will be held from 9:00 am to service time on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the Peacock Family Chapel.
He was born November 24, 1926 to Charlie and Elda (Chapman) Haskell at Garden City, Kansas. They moved to Kiowa County in Colorado when he was two years old. Kenneth grew up and attended school at Brandon, Colorado. When he was 17 years old, he and a couple of friends went to California and worked at Hills Brother Factory. At the age of 19 on August 20, 1945, he joined the Army, was deployed to Korea, and was discharged on January 31, 1947. Having lived on a farm for most of his life, he returned home and started farming and ranching in the Kiowa County area.
On October 19, 1948, he married the love of his life (63 years), Juanita Wright. They farmed and ranched in Kiowa and Prowers County for about 37 years before retiring and moving to Canon City to be closer to the mountains.
He loved dancing with his wife, Juanita, every chance they had - which were many. Everyone loved watching them dance and his children say they had their own unique, magic feet-like floating on water or gliding on ice! They were beautiful together!!
He thoroughly enjoyed supporting his children and the community in their various endeavors from school sports, 4-H, square dancing, and college. He taught each of his children to drive by practicing in the pasture and fields from a very early age. He always lent a helping hand to his neighbors and friends. Throughout his life, he and Juanita liked playing cards with their friends and family. He spent many fun years fishing with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.
He and Juanita owned a stagecoach and two tiny ponies who had colts. He drove the stagecoach with these tiny ponies and their colts in many of the local parades and the State Fair Parade at Pueblo. What a crowd pleaser this was. In December, he and a buddy dressed in their Christmas stocking caps and drove around passing out candy and telling the children they better be good as Santa was coming. What a blast he had!!
In 1979 he helped reorganize the Lamar Fraternal Order of Eagles and instituted Lamar Aerie 3898. After moving to Canon City in 1985 he helped to revitalize the Florence Fraternal Order of Eagles #169. He was proud to be an Eagle; a true Eagle! He served as the Local President, Local Secretary for over 15 years, State President, 12 years as State Secretary, 4-Corners Regional President and was recognized at the National Level for his achievements and inducted into the National Hall of Fame.
He will be missed by his loving wife and partner of 63 years, Juanita, and four of their children, Aleta Lynn Shoemaker, Danny Lane Haskell (Pamela Thorson), Larry Leroy Haskell (Cheryl), Brenda Lorraine Haskell as well as 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 1 great, great grandchild plus several nieces, nephews, cousins and five sister-in-laws and one brother-in-law.
He was proceeded in death by son, Wayne Laverne Haskell, his parents Charlie & Elda (Chapman) Haskell, his sister Alberta Carr, his brothers Charles E Haskell, Raymond Haskell, Wayne Haskell and several nieces and nephews.
At home and every gathering of family and friends, his humor and antics broke everyone up. Many have special memories of those moments! He will be remembered by his family and friends for being a wise and intelligent man with a lot of common sense, the "best" man they have ever known, a great leader, teacher and mentor, as well as the bestest "Daddy and Grandpa" ever!!!! He embraced each child/grandchild's chosen partner and their children with much love and respect!
