Robert Joseph McManus, 78, of Nashua, formerly of Cambridge and Marshfield, Mass., died Monday, July 8, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua. Mr. McManus was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Cambridge, Mass., son of the late Charles and Mary (Grace) McManus. He was the husband of Annette (Loprete) McManus of Nashua, with whom he celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on April 17.
Mr. McManus retired as a sergeant after 20 years with the Cambridge (Mass.) Police Department.
He was Past Commander of VFW Post 299 in Cambridge, a member of VFW Waverly Post 1272 in Beverly, Mass., a VFW State Law Enforcement Officer and Voice of Democracy chairman. He loved playing cards, teaching himself French and writing novels and short stories for magazines.
Mr. McManus was a Navy veteran of World War II. He served aboard the USS Wasp, Hornet, Ranger, President Adams and other ships in the South Pacific. He attended Cambridge High and Latin School and Bentley College.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Warren McManus.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert McManus Jr. of Coaticook, Quebec, Canada; two daughters, Ruthann Carlisle of Plymouth, Mass., and Sandra May DeLuca of Manchester; two brothers, Donald McManus of California and William McManus of Westfield, Mass.; two sisters, Mary Santos and Sally Byrne of Cape Cod, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
