Howard Proctor, 87, of Vineland passed away on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at Genesis Elder Care in Millville after a lengthy illness.
Born in Framingham, Mass., he was the son of the late Fred and Hattie Proctor. He worked after school in a local lumber yard while he attended Northboro High School. Upon graduation he joined the National Guard.
In 1943, he was sent to Fort Dix where he was assigned to the 90th Division Army Reserve. Later that year his division was called overseas. Howard fought in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe battles and campaigns. He was decorated for his heroic acts throughout France.
He received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Howard was very proud of the honor bestowed on him in 2006 when he was awarded the Maurice Chevalier Legion of Honor from the French government, which is the highest award given to a civilian. He was married to Alma (Hogan) for 65 years who passed away in May 2006. After he was discharged from the Army, he worked 25 years in banking, then eight years in Atlantic City Casino banks.
He owned and operated a small business in Vineland for eight years. Howard received the 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus in the '50s. John F. Kennedy was in his ordination class. He and his wife loved animals and made room in their home for numerous cats and dogs. During his retirement years, Howard worked for Bud's Pet Care Service. He enjoyed playing golf, bridge and bowling.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Edwin and David; and one sister, Helen Stevens (2006). He is survived by his sister, Pat MacFarland of Portsmouth, R.I.; nephew, Daniel Hogan and his wife Shirley of Massachusetts, nephew, Allan Proctor of Ohio; and David Proctor of Providence, R.I.; and other nephews and nieces.
