Irene Surrage Haskell Phillips, faithful and beloved daughter of our Heavenly Father, passed away on September 12, 2015, four months before her 100th birthday of causes incident to age. Irene was born January 12, 1916, in Ogden, Utah, to Charles William Surrage and Charlotte Sheppard, the third of their seven daughters. When she was six, the family moved to Heyburn, Idaho, where she lived until her marriage in 1933 to Merlin David Haskell. She graduated from Heyburn High School and loved to attend the annual reunions until her health failed. She was baptized into the LDS Church in 1934 and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1940. She and Merlin had two children, Betty and David. After Merlin died in 1948, she raised her children alone until 1952 when she married Clarence Hartsell Phillips and became a loving stepmother to his four children, JoAnn, Clarence, Jr., Veneta, and Ida. Irene and Clarence had one child, Danny Lee.
Irene always had at least one church calling--sometimes as many as two or three at a time. She loved teaching and was an outstanding teacher. The children she taught in Primary always knew she loved them and they cherish her still. She loved the gospel and her testimony was strong throughout her life. She considered her LDS mission to Oklahoma with her husband and her trip to the British Isles with three of her sisters and her daughter in 1997 as of the highlights of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, a son Danny, a stepdaughter Veneta, and three sisters, Virginia, Lottie, and Genevieve. She is survived by sisters Melba McCombs, Charlene Cooper, and Ordema Knobel, daughter Betty Davies, son David (Sharon), Phillips children JoAnn (Lamar) Hurst, Clarence Phillips, Jr. (Julie), and Ida (Vern) Wilkinson, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She loved every one of them.
