The family of Edward Vern Gabriel, Jr. is saddened to announce his passing on November 18, 2014 at the age of 88. Ed passed away at his home in Millbrae, California surrounded by his loving family.
Born to Edward Vern Gabriel, Sr. and Emma Lavina McFarland in 1926, Ed was the oldest son of 13 siblings. Ed left the farm at the age 17 to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ed sailed aboard the USS Jerauld as an Electrician's Mate P-Second Class. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy Reserve in 1955, and was proud to be part of the "Greatest Generation".
After serving his country with honor, Ed settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, meeting and marrying his sweetheart, Lavern.
Together they raised two daughters in San Bruno and Millbrae, Ginger Lee Valencia (Michael) and Sharon Lavern Armanino (Vincent), his youngest, who predeceased him one month ago to make sure he had a loving smile to welcome him into heaven.
Ed had a 35 year long career as a Senior Industrial Electrician with Varian Associates -Eimac, first in their plant in San Bruno and then their headquarters in San Carlos. Also, Ed managed his own electrical company, Gabriel Electric, until 1985 when he finally gave away his work truck so that he could tell his many loyal clients he really did retire. More than anything in the world, Ed cherished his family. His greatest joy was doing things that would make his children and grandchildren happy. He would fix a broken faucet or build a go-kart for a grandchild, or a staircase for a family dog that had gotten too old to jump up onto the bed. If you need him to, Ed could put an addition on your house. He had a superior work ethic that he strived to pass on to those who ever worked with him or help him complete one of his many projects. On his 80th birthday, Ed's son-in-law said "When I do a job I ask myself "is this the way Ed would have done it?" if the answer is yes, I know it's a job expertly done".
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lavern; his daughter, Ginger Valencia; his sons-in-law, Michael Valencia and Vincent Armanino; his grandchildren, Lauren, Scott, Rachelle, Gina, Eric and his great grandchildren, Kylie, Grayson and Colton.
