• Notes

  John Courtland Haskell enlisted for military service in the Spanish American War on 1 May 1889 at Tonawanda, New York. He mustered into Company G. of the 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry that was raised from twelve companies of the 4th New York National Guard at Camp Black, Long Island on 2 May 1898. On the 20 May the regiment moved to Camp Alger in Dunn Loring, Virginia and was assigned to the 1st Brigadie of the Second Army Corps. The regiment did not leave the United States but moved around the Northern and Central Virginia area in an attempt to beat outbreaks of disease. Typhoid and Malaria being prevalent; it would appear that more men died from disease in the United States than those killed in action in Cuba. In mid August 1898 the 3rd New York Infantry returned to the New York area and John Courtland Haskell mustered out on 20 August 1898. Source: Peter P. Haskell
