- Benjamin, of Shirley, was a private in Captain Henry Haskell's company of minutemen in Colonel James Prescott's regiment, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775, service 13 days. Reported enlisted into the army May 2, 1775. Also reported as a Sergeant in Captain Robert Langley's company, Colonel Asa Whitcomb's regiment. Muster rolls for August 1775, shows service of 3 months, 7 days, also shows wages for August and September 1775 paid at Camp at Prospect Hill. On December 21, 1775, he is shown on order for bounty coat or its equivalent in money.
Benjamin was later listed as a 1st Lieutenant in Captain John Hartwell's company, Captain Nicholas Dike's regiment; list of officers ordered in council, February 1, 1777, that said officers be commissioned, commissions to be dated Dec. 1, 1776; also on a list of officers who agreed to tarry at Dorchester Heights until March 1, 1777; also, same company and regiment, muster roll for December 1776 to February 1777, engaged December 14, 1776, credited to town of Lancaster, regiment raised to serve until March 1, 1777; also, receipt given to Captain Hartwell, dated Lincoln March 25, 1777, signed by said Haskell, for wages for December 1776 to February 1777.
