STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Melvin (Mel) Haskell Sr., 88, of Mariners Harbor, a retired Transit Authority employee and community-minded individual who loved being a grandfather, died Monday at Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.
Born in Charleston, S.C., Mr. Haskell moved to Manhattan following military service in 1951. He settled in West Brighton several years later, and, in 1981, moved to Mariners Harbor. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas in the South Pacific as part of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. In 1946, he received his honorable discharge as a technician fifth grade.
Mr. Haskell worked for the New York City Transit Authority for 28 years, first as a bus driver, then a dispatcher, until retiring in 1985. He was one of the founding members of the Staten Island Minority Civic Association, which through that he and other members conducted numerous fundraisers, said family. Mr. Haskell often worked within the community while supporting many people with the association, said family. He was also a member of the Staten Island NAACP.
For several years, the longtime Islander was heavily involved with the Curtis High School football team. Mr. Haskell was also president of the Curtis High School Parents Club of the ROTC from 1990 to 1992. In addition, he coached baseball at the Stapleton Athletic Club (SAC).
Mr. Haskell was a family man who loved being a grandfather and great-grandfather.
He also enjoyed traveling. Mr. Haskell attended services at Fellowship Baptist Church, Mariners Harbor, for 30 years.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, the former Ruth McCoy; two sons, Melvin Jr. and William; sister, Louise Dixon; nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
