ROCKLAND - Athene " Arlene" Flanders, 90, died Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at Pen Bay Medical Center, following a period of declining health. Born in Portland, August 22, 1924, she was the daughter of Leon and Cora Lufkin Eaton.
Arlene came to this area when she was 7 months old. Raised by Frank Judson and Florence Crouse, she lived in Owls Head until the age of 14. She attended local schools.
June 18, 1943, she married Walter Leroy Flanders, in Rockland. The couple made their home in Rockland since that time. Mr. Flanders died October 5, 2003.
In earlier years, with her husband, Arlene enjoyed whittling miniature wooden animals. She also enjoyed crocheting and collecting salt & pepper shakers.
Arlene enjoyed a life-long friendship with Vina Proctor. She was particularly grateful for the care and support provided by her son Brian and daughter-in-law Brenda, as well as that of her nieces and their husbands, Barbara and Calvin Roberts, Linda and Wesley Knight; which provided Arlene the opportunity to live independently in her home until just a few days ago. She was saddened at the death of her niece Barbara Roberts, December 28, 2014.
Arlene is survived by one son, Brian Flanders and his wife Brenda of Warren; three grandchildren, Tabby Flanders and her companion Brian Campbell of Auburn, Katherine Flanders Bentley of Rockland, Amber Rupe and her husband Travis of Georgia; four great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Zoey, John and Robert, as well as extended family members.
